Born in Hong Kong, Alfred Wong is a prolific composer whose music has been widely performed across the globe. His compositions have been featured at many international music events, including the International Society for Contemporary Music Festival, Cello Fresno - International Cello Festival, Indiana Choral Directors Association Summer Conference, Beijing Modern Music Festival, China-ASEAN Music Festival, and Macau International Music Festival. His wind band works have also been showcased at the Waterlooville Music Festival in the UK, Colorado Music Festival in the U.S., and the Singapore International Band Festival. Wong’s accolades include the 2014 CASH Golden Sail Music Award for Best Serious Composition and a Bronze Award in the ‘Xinyi Cup’ for Chinese orchestra works by young composers, jointly presented by the Art Department of the Ministry of Culture of China and the China Nationalities Orchestra Society. His music has been recorded by PARMA Recordings (USA), Hugo Productions (Hong Kong), and Modern Audio Limited. With hundreds of Chinese instrumental works and compositions across various genres, his notable pieces include The Eight Immortals' Adventures series for musical theatre, commissioned by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra; 1894 Hong Kong Plague – a Musical, produced by the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre; and Dream of the Red Chamber Capriccio, a collaboration with cellist Trey Lee and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Leonard Slatkin. In addition to composing, Wong has served as a guest conductor in Australia, Malaysia, mainland China, and Taiwan, and is actively involved in music education. He currently teaches at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and The Education University of Hong Kong, and has offered composition and arranging courses and workshops at various institutions, including the Education Bureau. Graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, he studied for his master’s degree in composition under Prof. Chan Wing-wah. He also serves as Composer-in-Residence with the Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble, and acts as an assessor for the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.
